Threads, Nuclear War 1984

I recently posted this on my blog, and someone suggested that I repost it here. Threads is a drama set in 1984, depicting the build up and aftermath of an all out nuclear war. Threads had a monumental affect on me when I saw it as a kid. The threat of of a nuclear holocaust was the bogey man of my generation. The irony is that we are probably closer today to the risk of a nuclear incident. For those of you that rember Threads (or the similar but less visceral, The Day After) or are watching it for the first time, I’d be interested in your reaction in the comments ‘thread’.
Running time: 1 hour 48 mins.

This also had a profound effect on me as a child too.
I grew up, and still live in Sheffield, Uk (where the film is set)…

Wow – good find. This scared the bejesus out of me as a kid. That said my lasting memory of it was wondering why the girl who gives birth at the end (born after the bomb) had a mouth full of mercury fillings when she screams in labour towards the end.
Top site by the way!

Whilst I never saw this on first broadcast, it managed to bring back a lot of memories of the time. I grew up on the Isle of Man and I remember the possibility of nuclear war coming up in conversation one day. I pointed out that we might be safe and my Dad corrected me, saying that because there was an airport on the island we’d almost certainly be targetted.
At around the same time, I remember my sister’s boyfriend pointing out that in the event of war he had a plan, sail North on his yacht, staying below decks most of the time and brushing the fallout off in the morning whilst heading for Greenland or the Pole.
The big one though was the time my Nan, who lived with us at the time, had a fall. I was very young, no more than ten or eleven and I saw at least some of it. I was really upset, sobbing and crying and to distract me my sister asked me what was on the news. I told her that a Bear-class Russian bomber had penetrated Allied airspace and been chased off. At 10, I knew what sort of Russian bombers there were and not long after, knew what Mutually Assured Destruction was and why it would probably save my life.
Thanks for finding this.

i first saw this on google 2 years ago as some background noise while i did uni work and it depressed the heck out of me. I cant imagine how scary it would have been had i been born a few years earlier and seen it on TV

This is the first time I’ve seen Threads and it scared the hell out of me.
All of the worlds leaders should be made to sit and watch this film, and maybe they’ll realise that there are no winners in nuclear war.

Nothing seems to be easier than seeing someone whom you can help but not helping.
I suggest we start giving it a try. Give love to the ones that need it.
God will appreciate it.
