Northern Soul

June 27th, 2007 link to (permalink)

There are two places in the world that rank high in the importance of 60’s and early 70’s Soul: the North of the Midwest, where it was made and the North of England where the blue-collar, black American art form was truly appreciated by their white English counterpart.

This is a great documentary about the Wigan Casino an unlikely and forgotten cultural Mecca.

Running time: 26 mins.

I don’t know what to say. My first girlfriend bore more than a passing resemblance to Audrey Hepburn and when her parents divorced she shaved her head and became a skinhead scooter girl with long sides and was into Northern Soul.

She would rave about it and take me through her record collection and try to explain the whole concept to me. I was ignorant of it all but over the years I’d see the occasional photo or some of the older people at raves would try and explain the similarity of running around the country at the weekends, not drinking alcohol and dancing all night.

Well now I know what it was about and I’m quite touched. Its another chunk of vital British culture that has fallen into place for me and made me feel, well I don’t quite know how to explain. But I love it when you unearth these diamonds on the internet. Thank you so much.
