Something odd happened in the early nineties in Britain. Jarvis Cocker summed it up as: ’suddenly it was cool to be poor’. Goodbye to wannabe Sloanes (or Preppies as their US counterparts were called) with their stand up collars, brogues, cords and jobs at stuffy banks; hello football, guitar bands and looking forward instead of back. At the time I was living in an abandoned warehouse, in London’s, now gentrified, Shoreditch, and it was a splendid time to be alive. Nobody summed up the mood of the mini renaissance better than Pulp.Hearing ‘Common People’ almost brings me to tears.

Thanks so much for posting. I really enjoyed seeing them in the height of their success. Jarvis is one of a kind. Is there a way to download this to an ipod?

I used to regurly commute from Bradford to Sheffield to play with a Olde Thyme session band at the New Barracks Tavern aka Hillsboro barracks Tavern.Ive always liked this town for its openess to different forms of music and culture ,without regressing into hip_hop counter culture for its own sake. This city is rife with the cultures of many diverse ethnic groups but as always remained at peace with itself,it is a model of which the Northern Brits should be proud.Dont let Gang Culture uglymusicart be”comethe dominant force because Sheffield is special and hopefully will remain so..
