Glenn Gould Chair

Nobody played Bach like Glenn Gould - literally. He made uncontrollable noises while hunched up over the keyboard, perched on an ancient chair with a broken seat that he carried with him for performances. Now someone has made a replica of the completely knackered Gould chair, for over a $1000.

Unlike many eccentric ‘artists’ Gould is the real deal, so obviously odd that his manner does not seem affected and his mastery is genuine.

When I was a kid studying piano, someone took the bench out of the studio and my teacher reluctantly had me use a chair for the session. I loved it so much I never went back. There’s just something about a bench that forces me to sit in an uncomfortable position. It wasn’t until years later that I had even heard of Gould. I saw a clip of him playing and thought “Finally! Someone else who likes a chair!”
Every time I play in public I get the “Gould reference” because of the chair. It’s amazing how people associate that damn thing to him.
