Religuous trailer

Off the back of the success of the series of bestselling books lampooning religion, it will shortly be getting the ‘light satire documentary’ treatment. Perhaps the good natured jokeyness of the format is the best way to irritate people who take religion seriously.

I don’t think Bill Maher was the best choice for this project. He has a wonderful knack for not only talking down to people through jokes but has a way of dismissing any sense of dignity for someone who may believe what he himself does not. It seems like a great concept for a documentary but I think Maher will screw this up.

I think he does a great job at looking at the funny side of how absurd religion actually is.

I’m willing to bet he picks the craziest Fundamentalists to interact with rather than those who have actually have a background (training / experience) in defending their faith.

Regardless of whether Maher chooses “trained/experienced” religious people or not, they still believe in the same jargon. Their beliefs are no different just because they may be a little more of an expert on the subject. The fact is that hardly none of the nonsense they believe in has any truth to it. The facts are not there. Actually, there is more factual evidence against god/religion than there is for god/religion. People (some simple, some complex) want there to be meaning to their lives, and religion does that for them. It’s just sad that they have to go to such extremes to do so. Life is great the way it is, so why do people go to such lengths in believing in such far fetched and theoretically impossible supernatural beings and happenings? The only answers that I seem to come up with is that its easy, and people like it simple and easy; rather than taking the time to do some scientific research to find the truth. IGNORANCE IS BLISS!!!

Here! Here! What’s really sad (and annoying) about people that have “faith.” I have my own beliefs, some traditional and many more that are not. Everybody (simple and/or complex) has the right to believe in whatever gets them through this life. And personally, I prefer to keep my beliefs and faith to myself – after all, we all die alone. Years ago there was a plague that swept through the Music Department in my undergraduate studies in classical music. I think they were on the order of born-again idiots who tried to get us all saved so we had a definite place reserved in Heaven. However, they told me that I played the “devil’s” music; I played a little JS Bach at church one night and that I needed to concentrate on music “for the lord.”
Bach was a devout Lutheran all of his life. The only thing he was hip to is that he cleverly swindled the church to pay his rent. Oh, and what did I do with my career? I went on to get my Ph.D in Music and have just recently retired after a long and rewarding career as a Concert Pianist. Go figure.
