After centuries of class and religious struggle, in Europe, the entire sub-continent is more skeptical of religion. That being said, state funded schools in the UK can be explicitly religious; there are publicly funded Muslim, Jewish and Christian schools which would be illegal in the US. I would honestly expect that in America, being that the debate is more heated over there and theres a bigger christian influence - but i would have expected brits to be a little more educated about the subject!
