The London Times’ technology section ran this piece showing the current state of the art in 3d animation. Normally this stuff is not that interesting and just a bit naff. But, having used 3d animation software fairly intensively in the past, this does seem genuinely impressive.

theres still something not quite right about her face, its pretty hard to place a finger on what though..that said, this is certainly the best ‘realistic’ animation ive ever seen

This is what robotics experts refer to as the “uncanny valley.” It happens when something exhibits most of the behaviors of the actual thing- this animation is ALMOST a person, but the unsettling pieces which fall short make it alarming and unsettling. People are more likely to accept a facsimile if it’s made more cute and cuddly and always appears to be fantasy.
That and the annoying amount of muscles required to move the human mouth convincingly.
