Generic Ass Video Site

Jeff writes in the comments: “you’ve really stepped down the quality of your posts recently. you got yourself a srsly generic ass video site now. congrats.”
And you know what, Jeff is right. In defense, I was experimenting, Smashing Telly has no ads, makes no money and is a hobby site It was for me to have some fun doing something I enjoy, it has won a couple of awards and people say nice things about it.
I was thinking about closing the site down, but am going to try and turn it into more of a community site, based upon link suggestions sent in. In the interim I am going to revert to full length media instead of clips.

It has been a bit lacking lately, but overall I really enjoy the content I’ve picked up from SmashingTelly. Keep it coming!

I’ve enjoyed nearly everything you’ve posted. And It’s rarely something I would have found on my own. Jeff’s a wanker.
Thanks for all your hard work on the site.

Yup – jeff is indeed a wanker – good news about full vids though…

Congratulations on your well-deserved awards. Nicely done, my friend.
Draped in medals, awash with complements, you’ve decided it’s time to lie back and stroke it awhile. Congratulations — it’s a hit.
Success is like failure, it’s how you perceive it; it’s what you do with it, not how you achieve it.

don’t let wankers like jeff (and eric, too) throw you for a loop. i think this is a great site. it’s anything but a “generic video site.” you should post whatever you feel is of interest, whether they’re full videos or clips. and believe me, everyone is allowed an off day, as it were, so it’s ridiculous to condemn your site based solely upon a single clip, especially when you consider all of the other great videos you’ve put up.

I don’t own a TV and can’t spend as much time on the internet as I’d like to so Smashingtelly is my main source of entertainment and information, believe it or not. I trust your taste and judgement and am willing to look at virtually anything you post on the basis that if it was good enough for you it probably is good enough for me. And by extension iI think it is good enough for most. wiht your recent posts we’re still light years ahead from skateboarding dogs.

Personally i find being linked to decent short clips as valuable as linking to longer films- the internet is a pretty big place, and it can be hard to find things of worth underneath the piles of crap. It doesnt matter if the thing of worth is 30 seconds or 30 hours- if it makes you think then its more than worthy of a place like smashing telly
I do like the idea of people suggesting things though, i know there are a lot of docs etc i’ve encountered online which would fit in well with smashing telly, but have never surfaced. The more people submitting hidden gems the better
!

This is the only video site I keep in my favourites list, and I usually take a look everytime I’m online.
Never mind the bollox, drive on mate.

Is it a “Generic Ass Video Site”? Nope thank goodness, you’re doing a great job and have created a website that many of us look forward to visiting.
As a personal preference I like the full length clips more than the clips but as long as there are enough of each it doesn’t matter much.

The phrasing of “it was for me to have some fun doing something I enjoy” implies that it is no longer fun. Your reaction to this (i.e. posting more, shorter, clips) suggests (at least to me) that you have fallen into a common blogging trap: the mistaken conclusion that frequency of posting equals quality. That is, it sounds sort of like you just been posting stuff at some regular interval because you are expected to, and that grind becomes more work and less fun as time goes on.
You say you are “going to try and turn it into more of a community site, based upon link suggestions sent in”. My advice: don’t.
Don’t let the notion that “blogs must be ‘fresh’ to be enjoyable” blind you. Blogs must be _interesting_ to be enjoyable, not constantly posting. This is particularly true of Smashing Telly, which seems to attract people because of the _depth_ of its offerings, not their _width_.
If you are finding less great movies to post lately, or aren’t having as much fun posting, then don’t post. You’ll hit upon something you think is worthy eventually. Post it when the passion hits you, and don’t bother otherwise. Don’t post just to post.
We (or, at least, I) have you in an RSS reader. I’ll see when you post, regardless of frequency. And, I’ll know that if you took the time to post something, chances are its worth my time to view.

Thanks for all the kinds words – the takeaway is that a mix of both long and short posts is OK providing the quality is still there.
But here’s the problem – when I post clips, they are easily digestible, people more often link to them and the readership goes up. When I post long format, people rarely link – and thats the best way for a site to grow.
So feel free to put a link to SmashingTelly on your sites and send in any links that might be interesting.
Thanks
Dave

In the interest of sharing good documentaries, would you consider putting up a form where the public can go to submit links? My cursory search for your email address didn’t yield any results.

If I were you, I would not worry about what anyone thinks, and post whatever you think is worth posting, whenever you feel like it. I would hate to see you stop blogging just because some people complained about recent posts. This is one of my favorite blogs, as almost every clip you have ever posted has been something I have 1) never seen before and 2)learned something from. I would encourage you to keep up the good work.
