If Robert Hughes is the grand statesman of art criticism, Matthew Collings represents the best of a newer generation. This is the first part of his BAFTA award winning series.

Running time: 50 mins.

Nothing pisses me off quite like modern art, especially in the context of art classes where one can spill ink on a piece of paper by accident and have a tutor come over and praise it like its the next jesus. Perspective, form, tone, line, anatomy, composition etc etc is snubbed, seen as unimportant, uncreative, a ‘low’ form of art while found objects and ‘newbie’ mistakes are praised ad infinitum – especially if you’re a good bullshitter.

Dont get me wrong- that kind of pretentiousness has its place, and the fact that it makes people like me grind my teeth with rage at the thought of it means its doing SOMETHING right – but the amount of financial and media attention it is given never settles with me.

@Anon To be sure, I suspect you cannot be a great artist without: 1. tapping a private income or 2. schmoozing a rich patron or 3. great marketing skills.

Of course all three of these are actively shunned by art school students, which is why the vast majority of them will never be considered great artists like Gaugin (private income), Van Gogh (rich patron), or Warhol (great marketing skills).

I just watched this documentary on TV in Australia.

Seriously, Matthew has to be one of the most intelligent dudes I’ve ever heard speak. He’s gets the modern world like no other.
